Parkhurst Legal Nurse, LLC has been in business since 2016, supporting attorneys and their clients with their cases. Samantha has experience as a Legal Nurse Consultant in several areas including investigating nursing home negligence, reviewing personal injury cases, creating timelines and chronologies of specified events related to an injury or negligence, producing reasonableness of charges and medical cost projections reports, researching literature, attending IME/DME's, and locating expert witnesses.
During Samantha's more than 30-year nursing career, unique opportunities have brought her to this point. Her experience includes Medical/Surgical/Orthopedic, Intensive Care Unit, Post Anesthesia Care Unit, Emergency Department, Endoscopy, Vascular Access and Presurgical Services.
Interpreting medical records takes a special talent that is not limited to only deciphering handwriting, knowing medical terminology and acronyms, understanding medical abbreviations, and comprehending electronic medical records. There is a plethora of other items that can be overlooked if not using a trained, professional Registered Nurse.
Having been an Expert Witness for the plaintiff, Samantha was able to help her attorney and client win their case, utilizing experience, training, education and knowledge gained throughout her nursing career.
Samantha has attended several American Association of Legal Nurse Consultants (AALNC) forums and earned Continuing Education Units in the area of Legal Nurse Consulting. Most recently she has received Certification in Medical Cost Projections and utilizes many professional sources when searching for data. Samantha attended a Mock Trial in 2017 hosted by the John Marshall Law School in Chicago, IL and continues to expand her professional network by being a member of the AALNC and the Greater Orlando Chapter of AANLC.
Screening and reviewing a chart for merit requires a careful eye and attention to detail. Once your client's medical record has been reviewed, a precise timeline of events will be created, that will include definitions and explanations for attorneys. It is extremely important for attorneys and the jury to understand medical language, the nursing process and standards of care, electronic charting, acronyms and symbols. Parkhurst Legal Nurse helps bridge this gap to support a solid medical malpractice case.
After an unexpected injury or illness occurs that has been deemed the fault of another entity, medical bills can be substantial. Samantha is committed to reviewing all the charges to determine if they are reasonable for the case. Each factor involved ~doctor, hospital, facility, pharmacy, outpatient practice, durable medical equipment supplier, etc. will have their own list of costs that were charged to your client. A grand total is calculated, and that figure is compared to the industry's standard costs, using factual cited data, to determine if the costs are reasonable.
Clients that have suffered an injury or illness may need to have future healthcare needs met. Samantha is able to create a work product that details the cost of items including presurgical, intraoperative and postoperative charges, discharge/home needs including postoperative appointments, therapies and other ancillary needs that might not be realized at first. This data is then compared to the industry standard, to calculate expenses necessary for any future care necessary.
Based on the needs of your client, Samantha can locate articles relevant to the situation. No need to spend time procuring this information on your own, just send the requested information and it will be completed.
When your client is required to be examined by a 3rd party physician, Samantha is able to attend the exam and create detailed report of the appointment. Thorough observation of the exam and your client's responses will be documented in a fact-based format, making this tool a valuable component of your case.
When the need for retaining an Expert Witness arises, it can be an enormous challenge to find the correct person. Many factors need to be considered: the candidate's knowledge and experience in the subject/field, their physical location, what their costs/fees are and of course, the amount of time it takes to manage the incoming and outbound communications. This last part is especially true when there are multiple candidates being interviewed for the assignment. Samantha is able to manage this by using several tactics to search for the candidates and keeping the lines of communication open. She has an ever-growing network of people to contact and will be critical in the interview process to make sure the most appropriate expert is located for your needs.
